Crash Landing
“Hurry, get into the ship!”
“We don’t have much time!”
“Hurry!”
“We have to leave NOW!”
I woke up breathing hard. I had just witnessed a horrifying nightmare. Or was it….? It seemed so real. No, no, no! It was just a bad dream. Nothing like this could ever happen.
Chapter 1
“Kayle, get down here this instant!” screamed my mom.
“Ugh, coming!” I replied.
I pulled the covers over my head and thought deeply about the nightmare I’d just had. When I finally thought I had the strength to get up out of bed, I threw off my covers and tried to get up. But I couldn’t. Something didn’t feel right. My head started to spin. Strangely enough, as soon as it has started, it stopped.
I quickly ran downstairs before my mom could yell at me for a second time. When I got to the kitchen, I realized that it was only eight twenty-seven in the morning! I immediately asked my mom why she woke me up this early on a Sunday morning.
“We have to go to breakfast with our class at Leah’s house so that the moms and our teacher can discuss the field trip next week!” Exclaimed my mom. “Go get dressed!” I reluctantly stumbled my way up the stairs and threw on a pair of navy blue sweatpants, a pink long sleeve shirt, and a pair of pale pink vans. I’m ready to hop out the door!
I quickly scurried over to my mom’s minivan. She put the car into drive and we were off. When we were about three quarters of the way there, the ground started to shake. I was really confused because we never get earthquakes in Florida. At least not this big. Suddenly, it happened again. I was now really freaked out.
“That’s it!” My mom yelled, “We are going home!”
. . . . . .
“Ugh! Kayle won’t answer my texts!” I said out loud in frustration.
I had intended to tell her about the nightmare I had had when she came for breakfast, but then the earthquake hit.
“Kayle, answer!” I yelled at the screen.
Finally a bubble appeared. But, it went away as fast as it had appeared. I tried to Facetime Kayle, but she didn’t answer. I had a million thoughts in my head, so the one where she was in trouble was immediately erased from my mind. Mistakes happen. Surely this was a mistake by the company. It was no big deal. Right?
Suddenly, I felt really dizzy, and the room started spinning fast. Then, again, it stopped, and I sunk to the ground near my bean bag chair. I looked over at my laptop, and saw the bubble signaling that I was getting a text under Kayle’s name. This time she actually sent something. It read, “RUN, RUN, RUN!”
“What?” I questioned out loud. I mean Kayle is crazy, but she’s not that crazy. What did she even mean?
I asked my mom if I could take a walk to see what had happened after the earthquake.
She answered, “Don’t be out too long, Leah!”
I went outside, and I headed to Kayle’s house instead. It was only a block away, but I knew my mom wouldn’t have driven me after the earthquake because of all the rubble on the street.
When I got to Kayle’s house, it looked like no one was home. I went to knock on the door, but it just pushed open. I walked inside, and called for Kayle. No answer.
I searched the house all the way to the attic. I knew something was wrong, and the shuffling of feet and whispers proved that. I got to the door at the top of the stairs not knowing what to expect. What if there were criminals up there?! I opened the door, and...
